This painting, and its sibling, Did That Really Happen or Was It Just a Dream, initially felt like a departure for me. Stark. Raw. (I’d even say “edgy,” but that feels presumptuous.)
Thing is, I sort of love them both. I was “in the flow” when I made them. At four-foot square each, it was freeing, physical work creating them, and very satisfying. Up close, there’s a lot is going on, even if it’s subtle from a distance. They felt instantly meaningful to me, even if I couldn’t pinpoint why at first.
After some reflection, it occurred to me that this painting is an extension, or iteration, of the Hermitage Series paintings, an exploration of memories of my beloved childhood home where I grew up on Hermitage Road in Ann Arbor.
It features indistinct forms and gestural lines incorporated with thick textural paint and collage that creates a dreamlike feeling – a blurry memory just out of reach. There’s a childlike wonkiness to the linework and a playful, free application of materials that allow for any interpretation of the forms. What I see and feel in response to these paintings is likely very different from what you see, which I love!
