EXPRESSIVE ABSTRACT PAINTINGS FOR CONTEMPORARY SPACES
“Marie Parmer makes beautiful things. Her range goes from small [Gelli] prints with energetic pops of color to larger pieces that can be sweeping, soothing, energizing or mesmerizing but that are always statement pieces in any environment.”
-Kimberly, commissions client, New York City

ADD A UNIQUE, PERSONAL TOUCH TO YOUR HOME
I create abstract paintings using acrylic paint, often combined with collage, charcoal, pastels, and other elements. I build multi-layered compositions on wooden panels, frequently incorporating an orbital sander to produce unique textures that reveal glimpses of history underneath. My process is a dance between deliberate, thoughtful composition and spontaneous, intuitive mark-making. I continually strive to create pieces that incorporate a juxtaposition of balance, harmony, and surprise.
My paintings explore the idea of connection – connection to a memory, a favorite place, or an emotion. The freedom of being in nature inspires me, so landscapes and waterscapes influence much of my work. I often explore the memory of a favorite time and place in my work – not necessarily as it looked, but how it felt.
For me, the process of painting is both grounding and empowering. I love creating something from nothing, painting something wholly my own from a blank surface. And if that painting sparks something in someone else, it’s simply a magical feeling of connection. My hope is that each piece becomes a mirror for the viewer’s own experience, sparking a connection that is uniquely theirs.
