My Approach to Commissions

February 19, 2024

It's difficult to express how much I genuinely enjoy partnering with clients to craft a piece that is special and meaningful to them on a personal level. Working with them to bring their vision to life is an absolute joy.

Step 1: Initial Inquiry

I respond to your inquiry by email to establish factors such as the size of the piece and/or the size of the location you’re looking to fill, and whether you have a deadline for completion you’re trying to meet.

Once you’ve decided to move forward, we arrange a time to meet. Prior to our meeting, I will ask you to gather information about work you really admire (specific titles of pieces of mine, along with images of work by other artists). I’ll also ask you to think about any colors you love/hate, any inspiration you have driving your vision for the piece, etc.

Step 2: We Meet Up

Ideally, I like to meet with you in person, in the location where the art will be placed. This allows me to get a feel for your taste, the other artwork and furnishings in your home, the lighting, etc. When that isn’t possible, I like to meet via Zoom, so I can “see” the space while we go over the project.

We discuss your inspiration, review work you admire, and go over all the nitty-gritty details of the project. I will measure the space, make note of the wall colors, and record any other details.

Step 3: We Agree on a Contract

After the initial meeting, I will provide you with an agreement that includes a creative brief, schedule, price, right of refusal details, and any other important information. No work takes place until you are 100% comfortable with our agreement and have signed off on the contract.

Step 4: I start painting!

My communication is very up front. I provide updates on how the piece is coming along, but I do not share any interim images. (We can discuss this in person if you’d like to hear the philosophy behind this.) I will create at least two paintings for you to choose from based on the creative brief. My timeline varies, but I like to allow for 6-8 weeks to finish.

Step 4: The Viewing

When the paintings are ready for review, I arrange a time for you to review both options without their final surface finish. Again, this ideally takes place in your home so you can review them in the location where the final painting will be hung. This is an opportunity for you to request any minor adjustments. Then I’ll take the painting back to the studio to make any changes (with photo approval if needed) and apply the final varnish.

Step 5. And… it’s done!

The balance of payment is due, and the painting is delivered, ready to install.
